MASTER OF DIMENSION BY MR. WAII_1920x600

HOW MR. WAII WENT FROM ZERO TO MODDING HERO IN JUST THREE YEARS

written by: Tim Lee

The time: 2013.
The place: A small village in Thailand.

Mr. Waii was tending to his grocery store. While he was selling ice and drinks to the locals, his mind was on the Cooler Master Case Mod World Series. For the first time, he had decided to enter a modding contest. But he didn’t know what the concept for his mod would be. Then he looked on the shelf and saw one of his favorites comics…

Hellboy VS Transformers: Only In Modding

Mr. Waii’s decided to build a Hellboy themed scratch build. He taught himself how to use a laser CNC machine and built the entire case using acrylic. It took him three months of hard work. Finally, the time came to submit his mod.

The winners were announced… AND… …nothing. Hellboy didn’t even place.

He was disappointed, but there was a silver lining. Among the list of winners was a Transformers themed scratch mod that placed second. It was called “Thai Farmers” by Suchao, a fisherman from a small village in Thailand.

Mr. Waii immediately send Suchao a message through the Cooler Master forums. Both modders ended up meeting and discovering they had a lot in common. One topic they discussed at length was mod concept. Like…

Why Did Transformers Win and Hellboy Lose?

“My mod was too simple. It was just the Hellboy name and logo. If you took those out then you wouldn’t even know what the mod was about. The concept wasn’t unique at all,” Mr. Waii mused.

What made Thai Farmers unique wasn’t the Optimus Prime inspiration, but the fact that the mod could also transform into a truck. That’s a concept for a mod that was never seen before.

Following the competition, Mr. Waii trained. He watched Youtube videos on how to use tools. He met other modders, including Modder Crow. And he practiced by joining local contests.

From Zero to Hero In Just Three Years

It was 2016 and once more Mr. Waii was getting ready to enter the Cooler Master Case Mod World Series. But what was his concept? What was something the fans and judges that they had never seen before?

Inspiration came from an unlikely place – a local car show. There, Mr. Waii had seen a car engine that was cut in half to show the interior.

“For me, all hardware is beautiful. But it’s often covered up by a side door. So I thought why not make a case that shows that beauty?”

And that’s when Master of Dimensions was born.

The most difficult part of the mod was calculating the weight and balance of the MasterCase 5. If the calculations were bad then the case might not be able to stand up or the entire form would be warped and distorted. So Mr. Waii made parts to make the chassis stronger and more durable. Master Of Dimensions took about six months to make.

Finally, the time came to submit his mod. The winners were announced… AND…

…1st place! In just 3 years Mr. Waii had taken top honors. His tactic to stand out from the crowd had worked.

Staying On Top

Mr. Waii plans to join the 2017 Case Mod World Series. However, he plans to do something completely different.

“Modding is all about showing the audience something they haven’t seen before. I don’t plan to stick to this style. I’m always looking for new ways to mod,” he said.
